Needles

No matter how advanced or sophisticated the sewing machine has become, the sewing machine needle is the most crucial element in the stitch forming process, and the basic principle of selecting the correct needle to be used must still apply. Quite simply, the finer the fabric the finer the needle, the heavier the fabric the heavier the needle, but whether fine or heavy it is important to replace your needles regularly.

At Sewing World we carry quality Janome and Schmetz needles for both household and industrial machines.

Not sure about what type of needle to use? The chart below covers the most common and their applications.

Blue Tip Needles

A Janome specific needle, the Blue Tip has a unique design with a pierce point plus a slightly longer than normal scarf to cure skipped stitches and puckering in any problem fabric especially synthetics.

Red Tip Needles

The Red Tip needle has been designed to penetrate fabric easily and effectively prevents thread breakage and skipped stitches when embroidering dense designs.

Universal Needles

For all general sewing of most woven and knit materials. For use in all household sewing machine brands and types for which needles with a flat shank are required.

Ball Point Needles

Also known as Jersey Needles. Made especially for sewing on knits. The medium ball does not damage or break knitted fivers. Use with knits and some stretch fabrics.
Denim Needles

The modified medium ball point and a reinforced blade makes this needle perfect for penetrating extra thick woven fabrics, denims, imitation leather or quilts with minimum deflection and reduced risk of damaged fabric and skipped stitches.

Double Denim Needles

For jeans and similar densely woven materials. Constructed with two needles from a cross bar from a single shaft. Sews two rows of stitching at the same time.

Embroidery Needles (Machine)

The special scarf, long smooth groove, and enlarged eye protect fragile threads and guard against excess friction allowing trouble-free embroidery. For use with rayon and specialty machine embroidery thread.

Double Machine Embroidery Needles

For use with rayon and specialty machine embroidery thread. Constructed with two needles on a cross bar from a single shaft. Sews two rows of decorative stitching at the same time.

Gold Titanium Embroidery Needles

Slightly rounded point for embroidery on most fabrics. Enlarged eye accommodates special application threads. Titanium Nitride ceramic coating improves needle wear resistance in high stitch count applications and penetration of coarse or densely woven materials.

Hemstitch Needles

The wing on each side of the needle creates decorative open work on light or medium weight woven fabrics. Use for heirloom sewing and decorative cutwork.

Double Hemstitch Needles

One wing needle and one regular needle on a cross bar from a single shaft. For decorative stitching on tightly woven fabrics.

Leather Needles

The cutting point allows perfect penetration of leather, artificial leather, and similar materials. Do not use on knit or woven fabrics.

Metallic Needles

A "must have" for sewing with sensitive metallic threads. The elongated eye prevents shredding and breaking of metallic threads.

Double Metallic Needles

Provides trouble-free sewing with metallic threads. It has a large eye to make threading easier. It also has a large groove to prevent shredding of the delicate metallic threads during stitch formation. Constructed with two needles on a cross bar from a single shaft. Sews two rows of decorative stitching at the same time.

Microtex (Sharp) Needles

The very slim acute point perfectly pierces fine densely woven microfiber fabrics and synthetic leather. Creates beautiful topstitching and edge stitching on silk and microfiber fabrics.

Overlock Needles
Has a sharp point for all fabrics. Choose system recommended by machine manufacturer.

ELx705 Needles

This needle is designed for use in electronic multi-purpose sergers that do the overlock, cover, safety, and mock safety stitches. Not suitable for use in normal home sewing machines or embroidery machines. Machines should specify Elx705 system.

Quick-Threading (Handicap) Needles

This is a Universal Needle with a small slip-in threading slot in the eye to make threading effortless. These needles are also commonly referred to as Handicap Needles.

Quilting Needles

The slim acute point and tapered tip perfectly pierces tightly woven quilt fabrics. Prevents damage to the sensitive, expensive materials used in quilting. Made for piecing and machine quilting.

Stretch Needles

The medium ball point, specially designed eye, and scarf help reduce skipped stitches on synthetic suedes, elastic knitwear, and stretch fabrics. The special construction prevents skipped stitches.

Topstitch Needles

An extra sharp needle with an extra large eye and a large groove to accommodate topstitch thread. Should be used where a larger eye size is beneficial. The very long eye makes this needle perfect for all types of decorative sewing when using heavy or multiple threads.
